Meet Dr. Karen Federici. She runs Family First Physicians — a private practice offering a variety of services in pediatrics, women’s health, aesthetics, and healthy lifestyle. She’s been a client of Covalent since the organization launched in April of 2020. Here’s how Dr. Federici, her fellow and a Covalent mentor worked together to create a meaningful summer fellowship.

Dr. Federici has grown with Covalent. This summer she wanted support to build her own personal brand with the goal of supporting, educating, and guiding mothers and women through living healthy lifestyles, breastfeeding, and navigating their motherhood journey. She came to us for help.

“Having been a client of Covalent since the first cohort, I’ve been amazed by how they’ve grown as an organization,” Dr. Federici said. “As I’ve worked to build a personal brand parallel to my business, my fellow was instrumental in exploring and developing that brand with me, as well as building out engaging email marketing campaigns. Coaching and mentoring the fellows while also having them deliver value to my business has been an incredible experience.”

Her fellow Brooke is a senior studying advertising at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign. Covalent gave her the experience to lead an experiential learning project.

“One thing that was different than I expected was how much personal responsibility and ownership I had over my project, work, and client communication throughout this program,” Brooke said. “While I knew it wouldn’t be entirely structured, I did not expect this level of freedom to create, build, and work through my own project and it ended up being a very beneficial experience for me moving forward.”

Jack Farrow, Brooke’s mentor throughout the project, has worked with three fellows since Covalent started. Despite being busy with a full-time job, coaching students remains a passion of his.

“Throughout my professional career, I have been fortunate enough to have had mentors and coaches to reach out to whenever I have had questions,” Farrow said. “Being able to participate in Covalent has allowed me to give back to my community. It was very exciting to see how Brooke’s professional development and confidence developed throughout the course of the summer.”

Covalent works hard to pair fellows, small business owners and mentors that will work well together. It requires an understanding of each of their goals and interests. In this case, we’re proud of the amazing work Brooke, Jack and Dr. Federici put in to make this project a success.

Please consider donating today to help fund Covalent expand access to opportunities for students and mentors and provide much needed support to small businesses.
